Is Paddle Boarding Good Exercise?

Prepare for an adventure on water, as we journey into the exhilarating world of paddle boarding. Ever asked yourself, "Is paddle boarding good exercise?" Well, let me assure you, it certainly is! Not only is it a fantastic means of instilling an active lifestyle, but it's also thrilling, joyful, and rewards you with scenic beauty that can calm your soul.

Starting with the basics, both standing and sit down paddle board variations offer unique health benefits. Staying upright improves balance and overall body strength, while the seated version focuses more on upper body strength. Whichever you choose, the fact remains - it's so enjoyable; you'll almost forget you're working out!

Great exercise that never gets old

One superb aspect of paddle boarding is the sheer variety of exercises it includes. Slow-paced, explorative paddle boarding isn't just about admiring nature's beauty; it's a phenomenal cardio exercise that strengthens your heart and boosts your aerobic endurance.

Have you ever imagined performing yoga on a floating mat surrounded by tranquil water? Well, paddle boarding lets you do that! The added challenge of maintaining balance on an inflatable paddle board while practicing yoga does wonders for your core muscles and flexibility. Also, it's a perfect way to find peace in the chaos of life.

If you're looking for something more competitive, get ready to pump your adrenaline with paddle board racing. Racing helps increase your stamina and agility while providing an exciting way to socialize with like-minded people.

The beauty of stand up paddle boarding is that it's a full-body workout disguised as an adventure. It engages your arms, shoulders, and back when you paddle, and your legs and core help maintain balance. And amazingly, in this quest for stability and forward motion, every muscle in your body gets a good workout.

Let's not forget about sit down paddle boarding. This type of exercise works your arms, back, shoulders and core while providing a less strenuous option for those early morning workouts or for people who prefer to take things a bit easy.

Paddle boarding is not just a solo adventure; it's also highly social! Imagine exploring hidden coves or gliding atop mirror-like lakes in the company of family, friends, or even your furry friend. Yes, you heard it right. Paddle boarding is fun to do with your dog.

For those who love traveling, paddle boarding offers an exciting way to witness stunning new places. It's also incredibly safe and comfortable - think of a relaxing sunbath while cruising the calm water.

Stress relief

To answer your question, "Is paddle boarding good exercise?" - undoubtedly, yes! But the advantages don't stop at physical fitness. It's mentally refreshing and acts as a very effective stress reliever too. Reconnecting with nature, soaking in the sun, or watching the setting sun magically ignites a sense of peace and joy in the heart.  A couple of our favorite paddle board yoga positions include Sukhasana (Easy Pose), Balasana (Child's Pose), Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog), Phalakasana (Plank Pose), Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward-Facing Dog), and Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand).

One way that people combine getting exercise AND stress relief on their paddle board is with paddle board yoga.  Stand up paddle board yoga can be practiced on your own, in a group or, increasingly, in a class.  They even have special paddle boards for paddle board yoga.  A couple of our favorite paddle board yoga positions include Sukhasana (Easy Pose), Balasana (Child's Pose), Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog), Phalakasana (Plank Pose), Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward-Facing Dog), and Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand).

Easy to learn with many opportunities for challenge

The beauty of this adventure-laden exercise doesn't end here. Paddle boarding is easy to learn, regardless of age or fitness level. Yes, you might find yourself in the water more times than you'd like initially, but trust me, smile, laugh, climb back up, and pretty soon, you'd have mastered the technique!  Everyone in our family has learned to paddle board.  This includes three year old kids all the way up to my eighty five year old mother!  While the kids love to stand up and race, my mom loves to sit down and relax while she is paddling along.  Meanwhile, everyone gets their blood flowing, builds core muscles and improves their balance.
