Over the years we have taught many friends and family members how to paddle board. So we have quite alot of experience and some deep, practical opinions regarding the best paddle board for beginners. Normally our family does not agree on any one thing, but in this case we all agree.
The winner of the best paddle board for beginners is our beloved Aqua Marina Monster.
We find that it is the perfect size for everything we want to do whether it be sit, stand, play, do yoga, you name it. You will notice a big, bold, RED paddle board in many of our pictures because, yup, that's our Aqua Marina Monster.
We bought two of these bad boys early on. One each for the two parents. Good thing we got the Monster, because as parents we have rarely spent an entire day paddle boarding on our own. Usually there is a kid, dog, or even a grand parent on board with us. And if the kids want to do yoga or the water is cold, the kids steal the Monster from us.
In addition to being the best paddle board we have found for stand up paddle boarding as well as sit down paddle boarding, they also make great air mattresses. We routinely bring out lunches out with us paddle boarding. After everyone eats, the parents like to lie back and have a little nap with our leash attached to a rock or a tree.
We have found the Aqua Marina Monster to be the best option in terms of size, speed, tracking, and stability.
Overall the Aqua Marina Monster is twelve feet long, but it maneuvers like a much smaller paddle board. The underside is very smooth with almost no drag, making it fast and maneuverable. It only has one (removable) fin which reduces drag and which allows it to track perfectly straight even when there is a cross current. Most importantly, you can't beat it for stablility. It is the perfect platform for yoga and for standing up even in choppy conditions or when boats go buy creating a wake. And most importantly, it is great for comfortably carrying parents, kids, dogs, grandparents and food for lengthy distances. You can get the latest pricing and reviews on Amazon by clicking here.
Our second favorite paddle board is the one we use when we are on our own and just want to go for a quick paddle. If you are a beginning paddler and are looking to purchase your very first paddle board, this board is an excellent option for you to get started at a very reasonable price. John just gave his mother and her husband one so that they can go paddle boarding while out camping in their trailer.
This paddle board is only 10 feet long and is lighter than our Monster boards. it is also faster to blow up with a manual pump. We got several of these boards since our teenage kids like to bring friends and these boards are very reasonably priced, so we dont worry as much about them getting beaten up by beginners or kids that may not be as careful as we would like with our equipment. At the same time, these boards are PACKED with features we love. The package is complete and provides you everything you need to get started. The board even has d-rings where you can attach a kayak seat or a folding seat like we like to use. They have three fins on the bottom which make this board better for paddling in rivers where their can be shallow rapids and other areas where the large (removable) center fin can catch on rocks. Having your paddle board stop abruptly, even for a second or two can be very surprising and often results in an unexpected swim! So when we are paddling down a river we will often use these shorter more maneuverable boards without the main fin. Since there are two small fixed fins, they will track down the river well without the main fin.
If you do decide to get either of these boards, we would totally appreciate it if you purchase them by clicking on the links we have on this page. That is because we get a small affiliate pay out which helps defray the costs of publishing all of this helpful information on a webpage. Purchasing thru the link will not cost you any more than if you went to Amazon and shopped on your own. However, since we have taken the time and effort to purchase these boards and provide you honest reviews, we hope you will use our links if you do buy.
We hope to see you out on the lake... or river!
